CPC Legacy

It is now the 10th anniversary of the launch of the CPC project. At the time we set out boldly to promote the photonics expertise of leading higher education institutes in the Carolinas.

Carolinas Photonics Consortium: A Retrospective
In 2007, CPC was founded by representatives of 5 leading photonics institutes in both Carolinas. Together, UNCC, NCSU, WCU, Duke and Clemson combined their prestige and expertise to seek out commercial opportunities and applications for world-leading technology and human capital on their respective campuses.

  • Enhanced collaboration between North/South Carolina based higher education institutes and local for-profit photonics employers such as M2.
  • Standardized research and established separate photonics specializations across regional universities, including that of NCSU in Physical Electronics, Photonics & Magnetics.
  • Launched a seed fund to invest in student-led enterprises and bodies promoting education-private sector links.
  • To date, CPC has provided funds to numerous enterprises launched by students and/or alumni. These include a technology blog launched by two students featuring tutorials on topics ranging from how to view private Instagram profiles, to tips on building your own social networking site. Other investments include backing for local nanotechnology initiatives and pioneering firms like Liquidia. More can be seen on our Projects list.
